Weapons & delivery systems
SLBM (Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile)
A ballistic missile launched from a submerged submarine, providing a survivable second-strike nuclear capability.
SLBMs (Trident II, Bulava, etc.) are launched from ballistic-missile submarines (SSBNs) that hide in the ocean, making them nearly impossible to target preemptively. This survivability makes SLBMs the most credible second-strike leg of the nuclear triad. The W76 and W88 warheads ride US Trident II missiles.
